ESIC Registration
The Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) is a statutory body that manages the Employees' State Insurance Scheme, providing social security and health insurance to Indian workers. ESIC registration is mandatory for employers meeting certain criteria to ensure their employees have access to these benefits.
Eligibility for ESIC Registration:
An establishment is generally required to register for ESIC if it meets the following conditions:
- Number of Employees: Has 10 or more employees. However, this threshold can be 20 employees in some states.
- Wage Limit: The employees' monthly wages should not exceed ₹ 21,000 (₹ 25,000 for persons with disabilities).
- Type of Establishment: The Act applies to factories and other establishments such as shops, hotels, restaurants, cinemas, educational institutions, medical institutions, and more, as notified by the government.
- Time Limit: The employer must register with ESIC within 15 days of the scheme becoming applicable to their establishment.
ESIC Registration Process (Online):
The ESIC registration process is entirely online through the ESIC portal: https://www.esic.gov.in/
Here's a step-by-step guide:

ESIC Portal Registration (Employer Sign Up):
- Visit the ESIC portal and click on the 'Employer Login' option.
- Click on the 'Sign Up' button for new employers.
- Fill in the required details such as the employer's name, email ID, and mobile number, and submit the form.
- You will receive a confirmation email with your username and password.

Email Verification:
- Log in to your email and click the confirmation link to verify your email address.

Employer Registration Form-1:
- Log in to the ESIC portal using the received username and password.
- Click on 'New Employer Registration'.
- Select the 'Type of Unit' from the dropdown list and click 'Submit'.
- The 'Employer Registration – Form 1' will appear. Fill in all the necessary details related to the unit, employer, factory/establishment, and employees.
- Upload scanned copies of the required documents.
- Click the 'Submit' button after completing the form.

Payment of Initial Contribution:
- After submitting Form-1, a message will prompt you to pay the advance contribution.
- Click on the 'Pay Initial Contribution' link. The amount payable (usually six months' advance contribution) will be displayed.
- Select the 'Online' payment option and click 'Submit'.
- Note down the 'Challan Number' displayed and click 'Continue'.
- You will be redirected to the payment gateway. Choose your preferred mode of payment and complete the transaction.

Registration Letter (C-11):
- Upon successful payment, the ESIC department will send a system-generated Registration Letter (C-11) to your registered email ID. This letter contains the 17-digit Registration Number, which is proof of your establishment's registration under the ESIC scheme. You can also download this letter from the portal.
Documents Required for ESIC Registration:
Since the registration process is online, you will need scanned copies of the following documents for uploading:
- Proof of Business Registration:
- Certificate of Incorporation (for companies).
- Partnership Deed (for partnership firms).
- Shops and Establishment Act Registration Certificate.
- Factories Act Registration Certificate.
- GST Registration Certificate.
- Memorandum of Association (MoA) and Articles of Association (AoA) (for companies).
- Address Proof of the Establishment:
- Utility bills (electricity, gas, or telephone bill not older than three months).
- Rental agreement of the premises.
- Property tax receipt.
- Bank Details:
- Cancelled cheque of the company's bank account.
- Employee Details:
- List of all employees with their names, addresses, and wages.
- PAN Card of the employees.
- Compensation details of all employees.
- PAN Card of the Establishment.
- Details of Directors/Partners.
- List of Shareholders (for companies).

- Exemption from Certain Labour Laws: Employers contributing to ESIC may be exempt from certain obligations under other labour laws related to medical benefits.

Post-Registration Compliance:
After obtaining ESIC registration, employers need to comply with the following:
- Maintain Registers: Keep up-to-date records of employee attendance, wages, and any accidents occurring on the premises.
- File Monthly Returns and Pay Contributions: Employers and employees contribute a certain percentage of the employee's wages to the ESIC. These contributions must be deposited online or through designated banks by the 15th of the following month. Monthly returns detailing the employees and their contributions also need to be filed.
- Facilitate Inspections: Cooperate with ESIC inspectors during any visits to the establishment.
